What Is ColorPlus® Technology?

ColorPlus® Technology is James Hardie's proprietary factory-finishing process. It's a multi-step baked-on color application performed in a temperature- and humidity-controlled environment, which means the finish goes on under ideal conditions every single time, no rain delays, no temperature swings, no inconsistent application.

How ColorPlus Finish Is Applied

1

Pre-Conditioning

The Hardie® fiber cement board is heated and pre-conditioned to create a stronger bond with the coating.

2

Proprietary Finish Application

A proprietary base finish is applied, followed by edge sealing for added moisture protection.

3

First Color Coat

The first layer of color is applied, then the boards are heated again to begin curing.

4

Second Color Coat

A second color coat is applied for consistent, even coverage.

5

Final Baking

A final heating cycle bakes the finish onto the board, creating a durable, long-lasting bond.

Why ColorPlus® Technology?

ColorPlus® Technology is engineered to outlast traditional field-applied paint, and it comes with the warranty to back it up. Here's a closer look at what makes the finish so durable.

  • Durable Finish: Multiple coats (50 percent more than your average house painter uses) of proprietary finish are applied to every surface and edge of our siding and trim, leaving no spot uncovered.
  • Guaranteed to Last Longer: The ColorPlus® finish warranty guarantees your home siding will look amazing, for years to come ... a 15-year limited warranty that covers paint and labor, protecting against peeling, cracking, and chipping.
  • Baked-On Bond: Between coats, the finish is cured in a controlled environment for an even stronger bond that resists chipping, peeling and cracking.
  • UV-Ray Resistance: Paint and other field-applied siding finishes can dull substantially over time. ColorPlus® Technology is specifically engineered to help resist the damaging effects of UV rays, so your color will stay vibrant longer.

ColorPlus® Technology vs. Field-Painted Hardie Siding

This is the question most homeowners want answered: Should I have my Hardie siding factory-finished with ColorPlus® Technology, or have it painted onsite after installation? Here's how the two compare.

Field-Painted HardiePlank® Siding

  • Arrives primed and ready for paint (the yellow primer color)
  • Painted onsite after installation by a painter
  • Finish quality depends on paint quality, painter skill, and weather conditions during painting
  • Will need touch-ups and eventual repainting, especially on sun-exposed sides of the home and with darker colors
  • Lower upfront cost, but adds ongoing maintenance expenses

HardiePlank® Siding With ColorPlus® Technology

  • Arrives at your home already finished in your selected color
  • Factory-applied, baked-on coating for superior consistency
  • Engineered for long-term color retention and fade resistance
  • Backed by a 15-year limited warranty against peeling, cracking, and chipping
  • Higher upfront cost, but significantly less maintenance over the life of the siding
